Float's notification system gives both administrators and users control over how and where they receive notifications. This FAQ covers common questions about managing notification settings, understanding why certain notifications are locked, and what users can expect to see based on their role.

Where do I manage my notification settings?
There are two separate places to manage notifications in Float, depending on your role.
Users can manage their personal notification preferences by going to Settings > User Settings > Notification Settings. From here, you can view all notification topics available to you and toggle channels on or off for each one.
Administrators can manage business-level notification settings by going to Settings > Business Notification Settings. This controls which notifications are available to your team and the level of enforcement applied to each.
What notification channels does Float support?
Float delivers notifications via Email, Slack, SMS, and Push (mobile app). Not all channels are available for every notification topic. The channels available for a specific notification will appear as toggles on the notification topic in your User Notifications settings.
Email is the default channel for all notifications and is always available.
How do I enable Slack or push notifications?
Slack and push notifications require an integration to be set up before they can be used. You can do this from the Integration Setup section at the bottom of the User Notifications page.
- To enable Slack notifications, select Connect Slack. If at any point your Slack connection is disconnected, all Slack notifications will be automatically disabled (only Administrators can enable this).
- To enable push notifications, download the Float mobile app. Once installed and push notifications are enabled on your device, the Push toggle will appear for supported notification topics.
Why am I receiving notifications on multiple channels at the same time?
This is expected behaviour. Float delivers notifications to all channels you have enabled for a given topic simultaneously. For example, if you have both Email and Slack enabled for a notification, you will receive it in both places simultaneously.
To reduce the number of channels you receive a notification on, go to Settings > User Notifications and toggle off any channels you no longer want.
Why can't I turn off a notification?
If a notification shows "Required" in your User Notifications settings and the email toggle is active but greyed out, your Float Administrator has set that notification as mandatory for your organization. You will always receive it via email and cannot disable it.
You may still be able to add other channels on top of the required email, such as Slack or Push, if those integrations are set up.
If you believe a notification has been set to Required by mistake, reach out to your Float Administrator to review the business-level settings.
Why don't I see a notification topic in my settings?
There are two reasons a notification topic may not appear in your User Notifications settings.
1) Your administrator may have set the notification to Off at the business level, which removes it from your settings entirely. If you were previously receiving a notification and it has stopped, contact your Float Administrator to check whether it has been disabled.
2) The notification topic may not be relevant to your role. Float only shows you the notifications that apply to your user role and the products you have access to. For example, Bill Pay notifications will not appear for users who do not have access to Bill Pay (i.e., Spenders).
Why can't I see an SMS option for a notification?
SMS notifications require a phone number to be saved on your Float user profile. If no phone number is on file, the SMS channel will not appear as an option in your notification settings.
To add a phone number, go to your user profile and update your contact details. Once a phone number is added, SMS will become available as a channel for supported notification topics.
For detailed instructions on adding your phone number to your profile, see: Updating the phone number on a Float user profile
Why can't I see a Slack or Push option for a notification?
Slack and Push notifications require integrations to be set up before they appear as options. If you haven't connected Slack or downloaded the Float mobile app yet, these channels will not appear as toggles for any notification topic.
Only Administrators can connect Slack to Float. For detailed steps on integrating Slack, see: Connecting Float to Slack and Configuring Notifications
For push notifications, download the Float mobile app from your devices app store, and turn on push notifications by following the steps below:
- Log in to the Float mobile app
- Click your initials or profile picture in the top-left corner
- Click Notifications
- Toggle on "Allow push notifications."
Additionally, some notification topics only support Email at this time. If no additional channel toggles appear after setting up your integrations, the notification may be email-only.
Where do I manage notification settings for my entire business?
Go to Settings > Business Notification Settings. From here, you can manage the enforcement level for every notification topic across your organization, organized by product area.
For a full overview of every notification topic and what it controls, see: Business Notification Settings Overview
What is the difference between Required, Optional, and Off?
Each notification topic has three settings:
Required — The notification is mandatory for your organization. Users will always receive it via Email and cannot turn it off. Users can still enable additional channels, such as Slack or Push, on top of the required email.
Optional — The notification is available but user-controlled. Users can choose whether to receive it and which channels to use.
Off — The notification is disabled for your entire organization. It will not appear in any user's notification settings, and no one will receive it.
What happens when I set a notification to Required?
The notification becomes mandatory for all eligible users in your organization. Their Email toggle for that topic will be active and locked, and it will display the message: "This notification cannot be disabled due to Admin settings."
Users can still choose to receive the notification on additional channels if those integrations are set up.
What happens when I set a notification to Off?
The notification is disabled across your entire organization. It will no longer appear in any user's User Notifications settings, and no one will receive it.
Users who were previously receiving the notification will be notified that it has been turned off.
What happens when I set a notification to Optional?
Users can manage this notification themselves from their User Notifications settings. They can choose to turn it on or off and select which channels they want to use. No enforcement is applied at the business level.
A notification is set to Required. Can users change this?
Users cannot disable a Required notification or turn off the email channel for it. However, they can add or remove other channels (i.e., Slack, SMS, or Push) for the same notification topic. The email delivery cannot be overridden by individual users.
Only an Administrator can change a notification from Required to Optional or Off.
Why do some notifications only show Email as the available channel?
Some notification topics currently only support Email delivery. If a notification topic shows only an Email toggle in the User Notifications settings, additional channels are not yet supported for that notification type.
This is unrelated to whether Slack or Push integrations are set up.
Can I control which specific users receive a notification?
Business Notification Settings apply to your entire organization and cannot be configured per individual user.
The notification topics visible to each user are determined by their role and the products they have access to in Float.
