Who Can Create Cards
Only Administrators can directly create Float cards.
Spenders and Managers cannot create cards themselves but can submit a Spend Request for a new virtual or physical card, or for a limit increase on an existing card.
Once the request is approved by an Administrator, the card will be issued.
For more information, see:
Spend Requests for New Cards or Limits
Approving and Managing Spend Requests (Managers and Admins)
Creating Virtual Cards as an Administrator
Log in to your Float account at app.floatfinancial.com.
Navigate to Cards > Create Card > Virtual.
-
Enter the required card details:
Card Name
Assigned Spender
Currency (CAD or USD)
Submission Policy
Click Create.
Once created, virtual cards are active instantly and can be used immediately online or when added to a digital wallet.
Creating Physical Cards as an Administrator
Log in to your Float account at app.floatfinancial.com.
Navigate to the Cards page and select Create Card > Physical.
Fill out the card details and select Create.
-
Before the card can ship:
Shipping Details must be set (either by the Administrator or the assigned Spender).
For CAD cards, a PIN must be set.
Shipping Details
Spenders will receive an email prompting them to provide shipping details.
Admins may also complete shipping details on behalf of Spenders.
Once set, shipping details cannot be changed.
Physical cards can be shipped directly to a Spender’s office or home address (exceptions apply).
Address Verification
We recommend verifying your shipping address to mitigate any delivery issues: https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/ac/
If your address can't be verified, you may need to provide an alternate shipping address.
For more information on shipping, see: Physical Card Shipping Timelines
Setting a PIN
Admins can set a PIN on behalf of a Spender by navigating to Cards > Use the filters to search for the card > On the right side of the card, select "Set PIN" > Follow the prompts
Best practice: Encourage the Spender to set their own PIN.
If setting a PIN on behalf of a Spender, avoid communicating it electronically.
A CAD card's PIN can be viewed from within the Float application: Viewing a Physical CAD Card PIN
The PIN can be changed once the card is delivered and activated (see Resetting a Physical Card PIN guide).
Bulk Creating Cards as an Administrator
You can create multiple cards at once for different users. When bulk creating, all cards will have the same configuration (card name, currency, limits, submission policy), but each card will have a unique card number. You can only bulk-create the same card type (virtual or physical) at a time.
How to bulk create cards:
- Log in to your Float account at app.floatfinancial.com.
- Go to Cards > Create Card > Select Virtual or Physical
- Fill out the card details
- Under Card Details, in the "Cardholders" dropdown menu, search and select all of the users you wish to create these cards for
- Select Create
- Once created, you'll see a "View Created Cards" button, which will filter all of the newly created cards
Important:
- Before physical cards can ship, the shipping address and PIN (for CAD cards) must be set
- This can't be done in bulk, and can only be actioned one card at a time
- For more details, see the Shipping Details and Setting a PIN sections above
- It's only possible to bulk-create the same card type (virtual or physical) when bulk-creating cards
- It's not possible to bulk-create multiple cards for the same User
Adding Spending Limits to Float Cards
Float cards are issued with a default limit of $0. Until a limit is added, no spending will be possible on the card. Recurring and Temporary limits can exist simultaneously on the same card.
Best Practices for Setting Spending Limits
Setting and Editing Limits on Float Cards
Types of Limits:
Recurring Limit: This should be selected for any recurring spend (such as employee benefits or software subscriptions). Selecting this option will reload funds to a card on your custom recurring interval (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly).
Temporary Limit: This should be selected for specific, one-time spend (like a work trip). Selecting this option will request a one-time limit with a predefined expiry date. Once the limit expires, the spending power will be removed from the card. Professional plan users will have the option to add multiple temporary limits to one card.
