Card templates let you save a card's configuration and reuse it the next time you create a card. Instead of re-entering the same currency, limits, and controls every time, you save them once and apply them with a click. This article explains what a template is, what it stores, and how to create and apply one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What Are Card Templates?
A card template is a saved card configuration you can reuse. Rather than building a card's settings from scratch each time, you apply a template and Float pre-fills the "Create new card" form for you. It's a shortcut, not a new way of creating cards - the card is still created through the same card creation process, just with the fields already filled in.
Templates are especially useful if you're issuing similar cards repeatedly. For example, a recurring stipend, a travel card, a team/department spending card, or a new hire onboarding stipend.
What Does a Template Include?
A template stores everything a card itself holds:
- Currency
- Card type (virtual or physical)
- Limits (recurring or temporary)
- Merchant category restrictions
- Autofill transaction details settings (tags, custom fields, and coding)
- Submission policy
It also saves two pieces of template-only information: a display name and an icon, so you can tell your templates apart at a glance.
A template doesn't store a cardholder. You still choose who the card is for every time you create a new one from a template - that's what makes the same template reusable across different people.
Which Users Can Create a Template?
Only Administrators and the Primary Administrator can create and apply templates. These are the only roles that can create cards for other users directly, without going through a Spend Request — so template creation follows the same permissions as card creation itself.
How to Create a Template
You save a template from the card creation flow. When creating a new card, you'll see a "Save as new template" button, which will save the configuration as a new card template.
How to Create a Template:
- Go to Cards > Create Card > Blank Card
- Add the card details for your template:
- Card type (virtual or physical)
- Currency (CAD or USD)
- Limits (recurring or temporary)
- Submission Policy
- Restrict merchant categories
- Auto-fill transaction details
- Select the "Save as template" button at the bottom of the page
- In the side-panel pop-up, add a template name and select an icon to be associated with the template
- Select "Save template"
Once created, you'll be able to proceed with creating the card. The template will then be saved to your list of templates that you can select the next time you create a card.
How to Apply a Template
When creating a new card, select a saved template from the template dropdown. Float pre-fills every field the template stores. You can then add the cardholder(s) to create the card for. If needed, you can also override any of the template's fields before creating the card. Applying a template doesn't lock you into its settings.
How to apply a template during card creation:
- Go to Cards > Create Card > Use template
- In the template drop-down, select which template you'd like to apply to this card creation
- Add the cardholder(s) you're creating this card for, and a card nickname
- Select "Create Card" once you've filled out all of the details

Does a template set the cardholder for me?
Can I change a template's settings after I apply it?
Can two templates have the same name?
Can I edit or delete a template?
Does a template set the cardholder for me?
No. A template pre-fills the card's configuration, but you still select the cardholder yourself each time.
Can I change a template's settings after I apply it?
Yes. Applying a template just pre-fills the form — you can override any field before creating the card.
Can two templates have the same name?
No. Template names must be unique.
Can I edit or delete a template?
No. It's not possible to edit or delete a template once it has been created and saved. This is temporary, as this feature is still in Beta. The ability to edit and delete templates (and more!) will be coming soon.
