Float cards (virtual and physical) automatically renew before they expire so your team can continue spending without interruption.
This article explains how renewals work, what to expect, and when you may need to take action.
How Card Renewals Work
All Float cards have a fixed expiry date (month/year). Before a card expires, Float automatically issues a renewed card.
Renewals happen monthly for cards expiring within the next 30 days.
Renewal is automatic and cannot be manually triggered.
If you need a new card before expiry (for example, lost or stolen), you’ll need to request a replacement instead. For more information on replacements, please review this article: Ordering Replacement Cards
Renewal Timeline & Required Actions
Renewals follow a structured monthly schedule based on the last day of the month.
20 Days Card Expiry:
Float will send an email (and/or Slack notification, if enabled) to let you know your card is expiring.
If you have a physical card:
You’ll have 5 days to review and can update your shipping address if needed.
If no updates are made, we’ll ship the renewed card to the address currently on file.
Please note: No action is required for virtual cards.
Last Day of the Month:
- Virtual cards are automatically renewed and activated
- Email and/or Slack notifications are sent confirming the renewal
- Physical cards are renewed and shipped
What Changes When a Card is Renewed?
When your card renews, the following details remain the same:
- Card number (PAN)
- PIN
- Spending limits and controls
- Accounting rules and automations
- Assigned user or team
- Transaction history remains intact
- Card remains in your mobile wallet (if added previously)
The following details will change:
- New expiry date
- New CVV
Virtual Card Renewals
- Renew automatically on the last day of the month so you can continue spending without interruption
- Are active immediately
- Require no action from the card owner
- Triggers a confirmation email
Physical Card Renewals
- Are automatically reissued before expiry
- Ship to the address attached to the expiring card, unless a new shipping address was added from the email notification received
- Must be activated once received
Required Actions for Physical Card Renewals:
- Card owners with expiring cards will get an email (or Slack) notification (~25 days before the month end)
- Update your shipping address within the 5 days, if needed
- Activate your new physical Float card when it arrives. For more information, please review this article: Activating Replacement Physical Float Cards
Old BIN Cards
Some older Float cards are being migrated to a new issuer identification number (BIN).
If your card is part of this migration, the following will occur:
- Your card number will change
- A new card will be shipped to you
- Your old card (i.e., on the old BIN) will deactivate
All spend controls, transaction history, and settings will remain unchanged.
Please note: If you receive a card with a new card number, you will need to update this anywhere you have the card's details saved as a payment method (i.e., subscriptions)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I renew my card early?
Not at this time. Renewal is automatic and based on expiry timing.
If you need a new card earlier, we recommend requesting a replacement or ordering a new card.
Does renewal change my card number?
No, unless your card is on an old BIN, in which case you will receive a new card with a new card number.
