Float cards (virtual and physical) automatically renew before they expire, so your team can continue spending without interruption.
This article explains how to handle expiring cards.
Please note: This article covers standard Float card expirations. If your CAD card is part of Float's early renewal due to the infrastructure migration, the renewal process is different. See: Early Renewal for Migrating CAD Float Cards
How Card Renewals Work
All Float cards have a fixed expiry date (month/year). Before a card expires, Float automatically issues a renewed card.
Renewals happen monthly for cards expiring within the next 30 days.
Renewal is automatic and cannot be manually triggered at this time.
If you need a new card before expiry, you’ll need to request a replacement instead. For more information on replacements, please review this article: Ordering Replacement Cards
Renewal Timeline & Required Actions
Renewals follow a structured monthly schedule based on the last day of the month.
20 Days Card Expiry:
Float will send an email notification to let you know your card is expiring.
If you have a physical card:
You’ll have 5 days to review and can update your shipping address if needed.
If no updates are made, we’ll ship the renewed card to the address currently on file.
Please note: No action is required for virtual cards.
Please note:
- Virtual cards are automatically renewed and activated on the last day of the month
- Email notifications are sent confirming the renewal
- Physical cards are renewed and shipped on the 17th of the month
What Changes When a Card is Renewed?
When your card renews, the following details remain the same:
- Card number (PAN)
- PIN
- Spending limits and controls
- Accounting rules and automations
- Assigned user or team
- Transaction history remains intact
- Card remains in your mobile wallet (if added previously)
The following details will change:
- New expiry date
- New CVV
Virtual Card Renewals
Your existing virtual card will expire on the last day of the expiration month.
It will be automatically deactivated and replaced with a new virtual card.
The new virtual card will:
- Have a different card number, CVV and expiration date from the expired card
- Become active immediately
- Have the same configurations as the expired card, including submission policies, limits and automation
- Be automatically reflected in digital wallets where the expired card was active
- Reflect the transaction history of the expired card
The new virtual card will not:
- Retain the card number, CVV or expiration date from the expired card
- Be automatically updated where it is saved as a payment method for your vendors or subscriptions
Important: If you have used this virtual card for any e-commerce wallets or subscriptions, you'll need to update them to the new card details on the merchant website.
Physical Card Renewals
A new physical card will be shipped to you. When you receive it, activate it from activate.floatfinancial.com and destroy your old card.
If not already cancelled, the existing physical card will expire on the last day of the expiration month, and subsequent transactions will be declined.
The new physical card will:
- Have a different card number, CVV and expiration date from the expired card
- Have the same configurations as the expired card, including submission policies, limits and automation
- Be automatically reflected in digital wallets where the expired card was active
- Reflect the transaction history of the expired card
The new physical card will not:
- Retain the card number, CVV or expiration date from the expired card
- Be automatically updated where it is saved as a payment method for your vendors or subscriptions
Important: If you have used this physical card for any e-commerce wallets or subscriptions, you'll need to update this to the new card details on the merchant website.
Required Actions for Physical Card Renewals:
- Card owners with expiring cards will get an email (or Slack) notification (~25 days before the month end)
- Update your shipping address within the 5 days, if needed
- Activate your new physical Float card when it arrives. For more information, please review this article: Activating Replacement Physical Float Cards
Proactively Replacing Expiring Physical CAD Cards
Optionally, you can replace an expiring physical CAD card in advance of its expiration date. This process can be performed by Float Administrators by following the steps below:
- Navigate to Cards > Filter for physical cards, CAD currency and the spender
- To the right of the card, click the three vertical dots > Select "Renew Now"
- Enter the shipping information > Click "Renew Card"
- The replacement card has been ordered, and the card owner will receive an email notification
Important Considerations:
- At this time, it's only possible to proactively renew physical CAD Cards
- The old card will remain active until the cardholder receives and activates the replacement card
- Please ensure you edit your subscriptions to replicate the new expiry date and CVV, the old card will not work once the new one is activated.
